Field Notes

Description:

The American Black vulture has a wing span of 5 feet but is considered to be relatively small for a vulture. They are often observed standing in a spread-winged stance and this behavior is thought to help dry the wings, warm the body and bake off bacteria. This behavior is also displayed by other species of vultures and storks.

Habitat:

Southern U.S. to southwestern South America. Open areas with scattered forests and shrublands.

Lovely series Kim! I'm rather fond of the black vulture - I think they are such a handsome bird.
Well stated Jason, this bird appeared to be so graceful for its size.
Thanks Christy - I have added this to the mission :)
Great series!! I know it's debatable but I consider these guys eligible for the Raptor mission!! http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627557
