Field Notes

Description:

A bunch of birds were fussing and bouncing around in the bushes in the back corner of my yard. Having heard that kind of ruckus before, I immediately thought snake, and sure enough this big guy (4-5ft.) was heading for cover. It rapidly slithered into a large pot of aloe vera, giving me time to get my camera. I caught it as it stuck its head back out to see if the coast was clear.

Wildlife habitat yard.

With the recent changes, there are no more subspecies of the rat snakes in east Texas, and they are all called the black or western rat snake, Pantherophis obsoletus. It changes to gray rat snake when you cross over the Mississippi river :)
