Description:

the patch of mushrooms was about a foot wide, and each cap was anywhere from 1 to 4 inches wide.

In the yard

Notes:

there were three of four of these patches, this one was beside a dying tree. but the others were just on the grass

I think that these are some old Honey Fungi. There is a mushroom in the first photo, in the background that seems to have some white stuff on it - this might be a spore print, which in Honey Fungus (Armillaria Mellea) realy is white.
