Field Notes

Notes:

Today I checked out a local great blue heron rookery to see if a great horned owl had taken over one of the 10 nests. One of the closer nests (75m away) had a nice pair of ears sticking up over the rim of the nest. I'll have to keep checking until the owlets are out of the nest.

Ashley, that will be interesting to see the comparison of a northern and a southern nest's development. Good luck, I hope we both get to see the downy owlets.
I'm also watching a nest with a mom sitting on it right now, will be interesting to see if babies develop at the same rate with our vastly different climates right now!
It does look like she's hiding. She's most likely sitting on eggs and keeping them warm when the temps started at -2F and was about 32F when this picture was taken.
Thanks venusflytrap and Ava.
