Field Notes

Description:

The Bald Eagle is an opportunistic feeder which
subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the
water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North
American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal
species, up to 4 meters (13 ft) deep, 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) wide, and
one metric ton (1.1 tons) in weight! Full adult plumage is attained
during it's fifth year molt. Sexual maturity is attained at the age of
four to five years.

Notes:

There were two Bald Eagles in this nest before my spotting
partner spooked one away. Over a two day period we counted 220 Bald
Eagles! The sheer sizes of the nests blew me away. 11:30am, Klamath
Basin.
