Field Notes

Description:

6-12" long. Large wedge-shaped, thin shell.

Habitat:

Sandy mud in water 2-20 feet deep. Foun from North Carolina to Texas and northern South America

Notes:

Small crustaceans spend their adult lives inside these shells, feeding on food particles brought into the mantle cavity.
