Field Notes

Description:

Either Exidia nigricans or E. glandulosa, as two species looks alike, and present no morphological differences. Both present sets of small carpophores, agglutinated tightly against each other, forming a soft and leathery-gelatinous blackish and wrinkled mass, somewhat cerebriform. The entire upper surface of the fungus is fertile, covered with small, sparse warts, sterile smooth underside (Ph N°3) with undifferentiated margin.

Habitat:

Seen on an unidentified fallen log, left to rot on forest floor. Seen in protected wetland zone (Réserve Naturelle de Mategnin) right on French-Swiss border.

Notes:

Thanks to Christine Y. for the ID.
