We all are :) Definitely took me a few years to get where I am with IDing critters! And I still make mistakes every now and then too. Things that help with IDing this guy is the amount of white speckling on the back/shoulders, the adults have that too, just on a black back rather than brown. Then they have a streaked bib, with a more spotted chest beneath that. Then being stocky overall points to being genus Buteo. Broad-winged hawks are very similar, but the juveniles have sparser and thicker streaking on the chest
Too stocky for an Accipiter, and the tail has thin bands rather than the wide bands the cooper's hawk would have. Very nice series, especially love the action shots!
