Field Notes

Description:

Argiope luzona (Walckenaer, 1842). In a previous spotting - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1283859984... on Aug 20, I showed hatchlings emerging from an egg sac and, just a few inches away, there was another egg sac produced by the same female Signature Spider. These spiders often produce several egg sacs and I have been checking daily, on the female, because her swollen abdomen indicated that she might produce another. Yesterday morning, I saw her third egg sac, but could not take a picture, at that time, because of the torrential rain. This morning, the rain stopped long enough to give me the time for the above photos. Please look at "Notes" below.

Habitat:

These egg sacs were spotted in our backyard, attached to the underside of a leaf of a banana plant.

Notes:

Picture #1. The empty egg sac, from which the hatchlings were shown emerging in the previous spotting. Pic #2. The second egg sac. The baby spiders will be emerging very soon. So, I will be watching attentively to ensure that I will not miss the event. Pic #3. The third egg sac which I saw yesterday. Obviously, it will be some time before I see any action from that one, but none the less I have to watch out because the incubation period seems to be rather variable. Pic #4. All three egg sacs (because of the "depth of field" of my lens, I could only get one in focus and I chose the middle one, the third egg sac) The reason for showing all three sacs is so that their positions, relative to each other, can be seen. Pic #5. The female. She still looks very robust and, since she has chosen a good spot for her web and egg sacs, there may be more to come.
