Field Notes

Description:

This sequence of pictures shows a juvenile being fed a grub by one of its parents and in pic 5 a second juvenile shows up. This species is easily recognized by its brown and white colors rather than being black and white which is more normal for woodpeckers. Male Arizona woodpeckers also have a red patch on the nape of their head which is lacking on females.

Habitat:

Spotted in Madera Canyon of the Coronado National Forest in Arizona.
