Swamp azalea
Rhododendron viscosum
37.4502, -77.5762
Field Notes
Description:
A shrubby azalea with white flowers. The flowers are covered in very sticky glands. These are especially visible in picture 1.
Habitat:
As the common name swamp azalea suggests, this shrub likes to grow in wet soil near a body of water.
Notes:
I suppose that the species name viscosum refers to the sticky, viscous secretions on the flowers. I don't know for sure that the flowers are toxic, but I imagine they are.
