Sachindra, that sounds like a good possibility. The sun can go through the transparent wings and heat up the black abdomen.
Maybe the transparent wings allow for more efficient thermal absorption?

Thanks Cindy. I saw a few of these butterflies in different areas. Each time was a disturbed habitat. This one was in a weedy section by the side of a trail very close to the lodge. The others were in the weeds in a pull out on the side of a dirt road.
