White Punk
Laetiporus portentosus
-33.7654, 151.062
Field Notes
Description:
Another unusual bracket polypore known as White Punk. Two specimens found at this location, only 30 cms apart. Surface is green and porous with many holes. Upon closer inspection this fungi looks like it has mineral qualities, not organic ones. Moss and lichen growing on the top of both brackets, hence the green colouration. Reportedly used by Aborigines as a smouldering agent (meaning of word "punk") for transport of fire.
Habitat:
Found in a local park amongst bushland in leafy suburban Sydney. These specimens were found on a dead tree stump along a creek course.
