Field Notes

Description:

A large yellow spathe (bract) envelops a spadix (spike) of tiny, uniformed flower clusters.

Habitat:

Swampy, boggy, or otherwise saturated ground in mixed forest floor of the western United States.

Notes:

The leaves have all been eaten by desperately hungry grazers. Swamp Lantern is a famine food. As soon as they have a choice, animals will stop eating this plant and the leaves will become huge.

The 3rd image shows the flowers fully bloomed.

Lovely. And I love the common name. Here's a similar Florida version: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/16973120
