Turkey Vulture
Cathartes aura
31.0686, -81.4134
Field Notes
Description:
Nature's recyclers! Sure they ugly and smell bad...but imagine if we didn't have them! Road kill all over the place. Notice the red, skeleton-like head and black and white feathers. In flight they rarely flap, choosing to soar on thermals instead. Wings held up in a "v".
Habitat:
This fellow and close to 100 of his relatives were sunning themselves in the tree tops along a small pond. It was really surreal - like something out of Jurassic Park.
Notes:
If you ever go to Jekyll Island, ask the locals how to get to the "Ampitheater".
