Field Notes

Description:

Black and white on face and wings and white back, throat and underparts. Bill is about the same width as the head. Some will have a red patch on the nape of the head. <br> Nearly identical to the Hairy Woodpecker except for the size of the bird and bill which are smaller. Also the black spots on the white part of the tail.

Habitat:

Forests of oak and pine. Can be easily spotted on bare dead trees.
