Field Notes

Description:

Anura; Microhylidae; Kaloula; K. pulchra (Gray, 1831). "The banded bullfrog (Kaloula pulchra) is a species of frog in the narrow-mouthed frog family Microhylidae. Native to Southeast Asia,......The species is prevalent in the pet trade and is a potential invasive species being introduced in Taiwan, the Philippines, Guam, Singapore, Borneo, and Sulawesi." Wikipedia.

Habitat:

I spotted this one in the rice field behind our house. The soil was parched by late April (the end of the rainy season) and the ground was bare with only remnants of dead grasses etc. So, after a sudden heavy downpour, signaling the start of the new rainy season this frog was easy to spot, sitting beside some tree roots, having just come out of his burrow. He had probably spent most of the dry season sheltering there.
