I think your right Karen, this one doesn't have the ridges down its back like the alligator snapper does.
Are you sure it's an alligator snapper ? I didn't think they are up that far north. http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/reptiles/alligator-snapping-turtle/ Perhaps it's a common snapper: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_snapping_turtle.
