Anhinga - female

A freshwater fish eater allied to cormorants but elongated with a long, thin bill and neck, a small head and a long fan-shaped tail. A glossy black bird with silver steaked patches on the wing coverts. The female's neck and head is a buffy brown and both sexes have a buffy brown bar at the end of tail. The dagger shaped bill is yellow and sharply pointed, well suited to their hunting method of spearing prey underwater. When at the surface the body is often submerged leaving only the snake-like head and neck visible.
