Field Notes

Description:

Greenhouse millipedes in Independence Kansas. Largely clustered on the main bridge at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo. You could find them all over the posts and stones of the walkway too. Several mating pairs as well. I'm not sure if its just that season or if they came out in such large droves due to the heavy rainfall we received that morning. Either way, it's very neat.

Habitat:

Thought to be native to Japan, this millipede has been introduced worldwide and is sometimes considered a pest to greenhouses.
