Golden Orb Silk Weaver
Nephila clavipes
29.586, -95.01
Field Notes
Description:
Golden Orb Silk Weaver, a common name for locals is the Banana Spider.
Habitat:
Woodlands. They build their webs between two trees at times, high enough I walk under them (I'm short), but low enough they hit my partner in his face if he doesn't pay attention.
Notes:
2010 was the last time I spotted one around here. I haven't seen them since Hurricane Ike and the 2011 drought although I'm sure they will come back eventually.
Another spider that people get this spider confused with is the black and yellow garden spider (Argiope aurantia). The zipper pattern that the black and yellow garden spider's web is an easy way to tell the difference. If you see them side by side they are easy to tell them apart as well.
