Description:

This fern was one of the least abundant in the area with only a couple of representatives.

Try looking at pictures of Osmunda claytonia and Osmunda cinnamomea. If you come across this one again, see if you can find white tufts where the back of the pinnae meet the rachis (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/183...). If so, it's O. cinnamomea for sure. If not, probably claytonia, but might be a genus that's not coming to mind right now.
