Field Notes

Description:

Several very similar Myna species co-exist and may interbreed at times. The White-vented Myna has a reddish eye, the Jungle Myna has a blueish base to the lower mandible with the rest of the bill being orange, the Javan Myna has a yellow eye and bill and the Crested Myna has an ivory (bone-coloured) bill. Differences in lighting can make orange bills appear yellow and/or yellow bills appear orange at times just to confuse things further. Some authorities no longer accept White-vented Myna as a species in it's own right, instead including it under Javan Myna. Clements calls it a Great Myna but in many areas where it has been introduced it is locally called White-vented Myna. See notes for more info on naming.

Habitat:

Landscaped green "lung" by airport.

Added this as a comment as the notes section does not format correctly. It shows the different Common Names used for Acridotheres sp. in various publications and helps to explain the confusion regarding the White-vented Myna. It also highlights the fact that the correct Scientific name (Genus + species) is the most important requirement for correct identification as Common names can be extremely variable and are often mis-used.
