Field Notes

Description:

If you've seen my posts before you'll know I measure by hand, so this little insect is about the size of an average mans thumbnail. It looked slightly bluish in person just like it does in this photo.

Habitat:

Coastal SoCal.

Notes:

After some research I found this insect to closely resemble Say's Stink Bug (Chlorochroa sayi) but I couldn't find a picture of one quite as bluish as this one. They all had the same distinct four dots and light colored trim around it's edges tho. So if I'm wrong on this ID, I'd appreciate a correction!

Species ID Suggestions

Stink Bug

Order Hemiptera, Family Pentatomidae (a place to start)

Shield bugs look exactly the same except they are orange
A huge thanks to AndreaLim for setting me on the right track! I threw all my Entomology schooling out the window when I put this spotting in the Order Coleoptera instead of Hemiptera! My professor would've rightfully slapped me. Wings forming a X on the back, exposed wings (no elytra) concealing the body segments, etc. I can't believe I missed it, but that's why Project Noah is the best!
