Description:
A robust horse-fly about 10mm in size, prominent compound eyes, short antennae, and wide body, pale brown body and yellow striped abdomen
sheen.
Habitat:
Spotted at Mahawu Volcano, rainforest area in Sulawesi.
Horse-flies are found worldwide, except for the polar regions, but they are absent from some islands such as Greenland, Iceland, and Hawaii.
Notes:
Horse-flies are true flies in the family Tabanidae in the insect order Diptera. Only the females bite animals to obtain enough protein from blood to produce eggs.
