Some kind of vine with dead leaves and fruit? Or possibly galls...

Hmmmm....Those might be galls. Galls are growths on plants where insects like wasps lay eggs. Over time the eggs grow and form this growth on the side of the plant. They are protected by the skin of the plant that gets hard and they hatch out the side of the gall when they are ready.
