Field Notes

Description:

I have no idea what this might be. I found it in a spider web. No spider was around that I could find. It appeared to have a cord of some kind attached to the blunt end. It was alive as it wiggled when I removed it from the spider web. At first I thought it was some kind of cocoon. The blunt end with what appears to be two holes almost look like eyes - photo 4.

Been looking around trying to find out what this might be. Perhaps some sort of moth pupa?

Habitat:

In garden

Notes:

After discovering more of this things and identifying them, I think this is a cocoon of some kind of moth. Haven't identified this one as I've seen it only once and didn't keep it to see what emerged.

Sckel, no, probably a moth pupa of some kind. See the other comments here. Joe
ForestDragon, I checked on this one again yesterday afternoon. He's gone. Woulda been nice to see what kind of moth this would have been. Thanks for all your help. Joe
ForestDragon, thanks. If I can find this thing again, you think I should collect it and wait for it to hatch?
Hi Joey, this is a pupa of a moth, most likely. It's possible that the web you found was actually a silk web spun by the caterpillar before it pupated (for protection). Really nice images! I moved this to the Arthropods section for you.
