Field Notes

Description:

A flock of Asian Openbills disturbed during breakfast this morning down on the rice fields

Habitat:

Rice fields

Notes:

I first spotted these birds a couple of years ago on a wetland area near the village, but the area is no longer managed, so now they have moved across to the cultivated rice field area to feed. There are many Apple snails, water snakes and fresh water crabs so they certainly won't starve. They look very graceful when soaring high above on the thermals, but close to look a little prehistoric
