Field Notes

Description:

Hesperiidae; Hesperiinae; Aeromachus plumbeola C. & R. Felder 1867. The butterfly in my pictures is shown in the "resting position" adopted by members of the Hesperiinae. As you can see, the forewings are slightly opened at an angle whilst the hindwings are full open. This is some times referred to as the "jet-plane position". When feeding, the Hesperidae close the wings together and only the underside can be seen. Paraphrased from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grass_skippers

Habitat:

Spotted on a bamboo trellis in our vegetable plot.
