Field Notes

Description:

Dull brown moth ~ 2 inches long and ~ ⅜ inch wide with pink and black rectangular lateral markings and dull yellow-brown triangular centerline dorsal markings on the abdomen and a dull orange-brown elliptical patch on the dorsal side of thorax. The leading edges of the forewings are ~ 2¼ inches long.

Habitat:

Suburban neighborhood on mesic, tropical, insular lowland plateau.

Notes:

Spotted in my garage, after first revealing its presence by sound from the rapid buzzing or thrumming of its wings. It was captured, imaged (images 1-3) and released outside (images 4 and 5). It seemed incapable of flight, for all it vibrated its wings, which appeared the worse for wear. The colors of the moth were noticeably brighter in images taken using flash.

Thanks for the ID, Jellis. I've updated the spotting. Somehow I did not note your suggestion when you made it; sorry for the delayed acknowledgement.
