Description:
" Highly variable. Wings of an individual may be all one color or may have several colors, ranging from pale to dark brown, and may have a white or pink tinge. Patterns range from faint to pronounced. Caterpillar Hosts: Walnut and butternut (Juglans), hickory (Carya), alder (Alnus), beech (Fagus), hazelnut (Corylus), and hop-hornbeam (Ostrya)."
Habitat:
There is abundant tag alder (Alnus incana) and hazel (Corylus spp.)in the area as well as some hop-hornbeam (Ostrya) in oak forests. Walnut occurs but only as scattered planted yard trees and does not grow in any of the forests.
