Field Notes

Description:

Papilionidae; Papilioninae; Papilionini; Menelaides polytes ledebouria Eschscholtz 1821. By comparing my pictures with those shown in Philippine Lepidoptera's website, I can say that this is a female and it is an example of the form praxilla. According to Wikipedia "This butterfly is known for the mimicry displayed by the numerous forms of its females which mimic inedible red-bodied swallowtails, such as the common rose and the crimson rose."

Habitat:

Spotted in our back yard visiting Periwinkle ( Catharanthus roseus) locally known as Tsitsirika.
