Field Notes
Description:
Sparassidae; Olios; Olios sp. I have seen spiders like this one, from time to time in our immediate area, but not very often. I can't be certain, but I think I may have only seen 4 or 5 specimens, in the last seven years or so that I have been actively taking an interest in our local biodiversity. This could indicate that Olios spiders are rare here, but I don't think that is the case. Having witnessed their incredible speed when they know that they have been spotted and run for cover, I tend to think of them as being reclusive and highly alert. So, if they dash off and hide, they will not be so easy to spot as, for example, jumping spiders which are usually very calm and will even jump onto your camera when your taking pictures. Having said all that, the rarity of opportunity to take photos of Olios is not the main problem. The greatest difficulty I have is identifying them, once I already have some pictures. For example, Wikipedia publishes a list of 177 Olios spp. and the vast majority of them are printed in red which means they have no pictures available for display. So, whenever I see an Olios, I know what I am going to call it, even before I take a single picture - Olios sp. Come to think of it, that's not too difficult. In fact it makes it rather easy :-). But, slightly more seriously, if you can identify this spider, please let me know. It would be a great help.
Habitat:
This Huntsman Spider was spotted in our front garden.
