Field Notes

Description:

The Cyclosa sp. in this spotting has produced a stabilimentum (web decoration) which looks very similar to the one in my spotting yesterday - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1115357381...but there is one significant difference. The spider in this spotting is accumulating trash to build another decoration, in addition to the stabilimentum. I now have 11 spottings of Cyclosa spiders in Project Noah and I thought it might be interesting to compare them, in terms of the presence on their webs, of Stabilimenta and Trash accumulations. Of course, this is not very scientific because my spottings represent a "snapshot in time". In other words, I did not follow up on these spottings to see if more decoration was added later. See Notes below.

Habitat:

This Cyclosa sp. was spotted on its web in foliage along the roadside.

Notes:

In my 11 spottings of Cyclosa spiders, it worked out as follows: With Trash Decoration only - 7; Stabilimentum only - 1; Stabilimentum and Trash - 2; No stabilimentum and no trash - 1. None of this has any scientific value. I just like looking at things from different angles from time to time. Nothing much ever comes from my petty foibles, other than the fact that I usually learn a little and I enjoy that.
