Field Notes

Description:

The spotted owlet is small (21 cm) and stocky. It breeds in tropical Asia from India to Southeast Asia. I saw these little owls, originally 5 of them, at 3000 m in the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu near Kerala.

Habitat:

Open habitats in tropical areas, including farmland and human habitation.
Foothills of the Nilgiris mountain range.
