Field Notes

Description:

Several dark gray-to-black “sticks”, some branching, ~ 1 inch tall and less than ⅛ inch in diameter with white tips.

Habitat:

Lowland insular tropical mesic mixed forest and shrubland.

Notes:

Spotted growing in mud in the lee of a fallen log alongside the Ehukai Pillbox Trail ascending the bluff behind the coastal strand on the North Shore of Oahu.

Searching online, I found similar-appearing fungi, "Candle Snuff Fungus", Xylaria sp., described (as Number 7)* at

https://dabawenyolife.wordpress.com/category/philippine-biodiversity-fi…

*It is necessary to scroll down from Number 9 to find Number 7; spottings are listed in reverse numerical order on this site.

Further searching led me to the referenced Wikipedia article
