Black-throated Canary
Crithagra atrogularis
-20.3604, 14.9462
Field Notes
Description:
Very inconspicuous looking bird, small in size (approx 10 to 11 cm), brown grey and lightly streaked, no particular markings except black smudge on throat (well seen in pic N° 1) and yellow rump (not visible in any of these pics, sorry). These pics were taken in two different locations, 800m from each other, first two at sunset, and last three in the morning.
Habitat:
Observed in Kunene region, north west of Namibia, in gardens of a camp where we were staying; these gardens leading to 'thornveld' - arid acacia tree-and-shrub landscape beyond. The region is still very dry (but still magnificent and rich in wildlife) at the moment, and grasses that accompany this habitat are rare following a three-year dry-spell. Found in dry savannah type of habitats all over sub-Saharan Africa.
Notes:
Previously known as Serinus atrogularis.
