Field Notes

Description:

The smallest woodpecker species in North America. Male. 6 inches long (15.24 cm). Wingspan: 10-12 inches (26-31 cm). Black and white underparts. White-spotted black wings. Black and white streaked face. Male has red on nape. Long black bill. Feeds on variety of insects and seeds

Habitat:

Open woodlands/my backyard woods. Mainly in deciduous woods. I usually see the male at the bird feeder. It is nice to see it in its natural habitat. Range: Mostly covering continental USA including parts of Alaska and southern Canada. Not seen in southern Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California.

Notes:

In the video after pecking the hole for 5 minutes, it seems to be catching insects in the air. 21 - 24 x zoom. I didn't want to risk it flying away. Because of the distance view video only on 720 HD and large player. Thanks! Enjoy the music too.
