Description:
They are mainly black with a red crest, and have a white line down the sides of the throat. They show white on the wings in flight. Adult males have a red line from the bill to the throat, in adult females these are black.
Habitat:
This one was found in a County nature Preserve along side of a boardwalk building a nest in a snag (dead tree). The area is a slash pine wooded area. It is completely unconcerned regarding people walking by each day (many do not know what is going on anyway).
Notes:
Up to four subspecies of Pileated Woodpeckers have been recognized historically. This one is possibly Florida Pileated Woodpecker (D. p. floridanus) –the Florida peninsula. However, many authors only recognize two subspecies, the southernly D. p. pileatus and the northerly D. p. abieticola.
