Description:

They are similar to the northern cardinal, except this bird is gray all over with a red mask on the face and an orange bill. Parts of the wings and the crest are also red.

Habitat:

They are found in desert scrub and mesquite thickets in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico.

Thanks Kunzah! They do look very similar to cardinals! I was so excited to find this bird, and I saw dozens, and this was the only one that let me take its picture, and it's not even a great picture. I will keep trying though!
Very cool bird, Ashley! At first glance, it looks like a female Cardinalis cardinalis.
