Field Notes

Description:

This wasn't actually the Heron I was trying to capture, I was following a large cocoi heron throuugh the foliage as the boat was moving but the Kokoi disappeared and this one, doing its best to hide in the trees appeared in my viewfinder instead. These birds stand still at the water's edge and wait to ambush prey, mainly at night or early morning. They primarily eat small fish, crustaceans, frogs, aquatic insects, small mammals and small birds

Habitat:

Seen at Caroni Swamp in Trinidad but their range includes both North and South America as far down as Argentina and Chile.
