Field Notes

Description:

This is an all black, small (some 30 cm in length incl tail) but smart, fearless and aggressive Asian predatory songbird. It was, until recently, considered a subspecies of African Fork-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis).

Habitat:

Here observed in urban environment of Cox's Bazar, over number of days and in various spots of the town. Also observed seen in great numbers in all visited rural areas in Teknaf peninsula; and always close to habitations and agricultural fields.

Notes:

It is often associated with farming and livestock, and farmers appreciate Drongos for helping them in controlling crop and animal pests. I often observed number of wooden sticks planted in paddy and vegetable fields, purposefully for drongos to perch as sentinelles over crops. Also appreciated by cattle growers, as it use to clean animals of ectoparasites. ome.
