Northern Rough Greensnake
Opheodrys aestivus
37.47, -77.61
Field Notes
Description:
This little snake was found already deceased in the yard as I was mowing the lawn (did not run over it with the mower). It looked like it had been dead for at least a day. I suspect a predator killed it. We do have a lot of cats in the neighborhood, which might explain why it wasn't consumed. This species is usually found up in trees and shrubs, though they do come down in to grass to hunt. They eat invertebrates.
Habitat:
Suburban yard.
Notes:
Hopefully, I will get a chance to see a live one.
