Field Notes

Description:

Very noticeable velvety stem base is a good key to ID, along with the lack of a ring/annulus. It is often one of the earliest mushrooms of the year. Believe it or not, this is the same species as the enoki you can buy in the store. Store-bought enoki are grown in a CO2-rich environment without sunlight to encourage long stems and white coloration.

Habitat:

On the base of an alder on a muddy path
