Field Notes

Description:

This mantis was making a meal of one of those 'plague beetles'. It was impressive to watch - deftly holding the (female) beetle it it's left 'crook' and squeezed until some eggs came out like toothpaste. It scooped those off with it's right 'crook' and ate them one-by-one. Delicious! About 60mm long.

Habitat:

Local spotsground on low shrubs.

Notes:

Probably Pseudomantis albofimbriata but need to re-check my photos for tibial patch.

Thanks guys.. sorry the video didn't work out.
I thought I had a close-up of it eating - just can't find it yet.
