Hawfinch
Coccothraustes coccothraustes
46.2518, 6.07647
Field Notes
Description:
A biggest finch on the continent, well over 15cm but short of 20 cm in length... The finch appearance, the size and massive head combined with a massive pale (winter color) conical bill makes it easy to recognize. For the rest of the description, as my field guide says "Dominant colors are rusty-brown and buff, with black, white and grey embellishments" (Collins Bird Guide; Svensson, Mullarney & Zetterström). Tail is short.
Habitat:
Here observed from my window, on trees where we have put our feeders. Our residence is in the valley, right in between the slopes of Jura mountains and Leman (Geneva) lake; close to a half natural town park, with large portion of it wooded (mixed alpine forest).
Notes:
This photo belongs to one of my favorite series - in my archives, the series is named "from my window"... and it is rather insteresting what we were able to see from our windows! Every winter, my son and I install about 25 small feeders on trees around our building; and we place them so that we can observe them from our windows. We also have some further four feeding spots on our windowsills and balcony - and I found it to be a ather rare privilige to observe them and count what comes on them...
In some cases, we get lucky - like today, with these Hawfinches - they were my lifer ! I can't understand how have this bird happily eluded us for the last four winters (since we live here), but like every winter, we found some nice surprises on our feeders.
Photos are maybe not great - but, as usual, I had to shot quickly, without opening the windows, and over the barriere and through those branches...
