Description:
I'm not really sure how to describe this odd-looking fish. It looks exactly like sargassum weed, where it spends all of its life. It has feathery projections all over its body to mimic the movement of the sargassum weed in the water.
Habitat:
It has a cosmopolitan distribution in tropical and subtropical waters. It lives its whole life in sargassum weed, and when the weed gets washed ashore, the fish gets washed ashore too and is usually eaten by a bird. Circle of life though!
Notes:
We collected a whole bunch of sargassum weed and picked through it all for hours and found about a dozen sargassum fish. We put them in a bucket for a better look, then they were returned to the Gulf.
