Stringy moss growing in a thick mat at the base of a tree

Habitat:

Mixed Deciduous forest, growing at the base of a tree to about .5 meters off of the ground.

Species ID Suggestions

looks like a regular moss, just trying to migrate up the tree.

I've never seen it grow like this (so I'm probably wrong), but it looks like some species of fern moss (Thuidium).
