Field Notes

Description:

Beautiful brown moth with tan stripes and a 3 inch wingspan. Its hindwing has a wide pink band. This family is also known as Hawk Moths. The caterpillar can be seen at my other spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/23085032 and the adult in flight at: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1397162511

Habitat:

Backyard resting on a Scilla sp. "Its range extends from Central America, through the United States and into parts of Canada."

Notes:

"The adult of this species is a key pollinator of the rare lemon lily (Lilium parryi) in California." The caterpillars eat Willow weed (Epilobium), Four o'clock (Mirabilis jalapa), Apple (Malus), Evening primrose (Oenothera), Elm (Ulmus), Grape (Vitis), Tomato (Lycopersicon), Purslane (Portulaca), and Fuchsia.

Love your spotting!! I do not know if you had a chance to see it's eyes... they look so human like!! I had Portulaca, Fuchsia and Lantana plus lots of other flowers, when it came in my garden to breed, later the babies came out of my red Lantana and flew away.
