Field Notes
Description:
Average sized marmoset with adults growing to 18-22cm (6"-10") plus the tail and weighing in around 300-400g. They are light brown around the forelegs, chest and neck but darker on their backs hind legs and head. The ears and nose are bare, they have a characteristic yellowish stripe through their flanks and of course a black tail.
Habitat:
Found mostly outside the Amazon, thier range is south through the Brazilian Pantanal, west into Bolivia and south into Paraguay. I found these in the Pantanal. They are arboreal and while they kept up reasonably high, these guys did come over to check me out.
Notes:
This species live mainly on tree sap, although will take bird eggs, some fruit and insects. Like other marmosets they have claws rather than nails at the end of their digits as opposed to higher primates. They are also the southern most occurring of the Mico genus.
